This system was developed by Dr. Craig Erskine-Smith following his experience as a cosmetic dentist where he realised there were many shortcomings with the current methods used to:
- Close diastemas such that proportion with adjacent teeth was maintained.
- Convert canines to laterals.
- Convert peg laterals to normal laterals etc.
Many of these shortcomings related to the fact that the teeth were not in the right proportion when the job was finished, nor were the teeth symmetrical. He then used mathematical formulas to calculate what size the teeth should be so that they conform to fundamental human norms of size and proportion.
Tables and charts were developed which enable the general practitioner to quickly and easily ascertain what size they should make a tooth, given the existing size of the adjacent or contralateral tooth or given the arch length of the smile zone. Dentists can now use the tables and charts to close diastemas in such a way as to maintain correct proportions and symmetry.
